Next time you are sitting in a meeting at work day dreaming of what you’re going to have for dinner or whether you’ll be home in time for Corrie, bare in mind that taking notes shows you are being attentive, creates a professional impression and provides a valuable reference at a later date. There is a growing trend of people taking notes on their laptop or iPad but the constant tapping can be distracting and break the connection you have with your colleagues so we prefer to opt for a good old fashioned pen and paper.
If your notes look like a doctors prescription pad at the end of the meeting, follow these four simple rules and you’ll be hitting the right note.
1. Start your notes with the date of the meeting and make note of all of the people in attendance.
----------------------------------------------------------
2. Split your page into 3 columns, one for notes, one for actions, decisions and those responsible and one for the date the action needs to be completed.
----------------------------------------------------------
3. Leave a space at the bottom of the page for interesting websites or facts that someone might mention that you can research later, make note of
who said it in case you need to talk to them later on. ----------------------------------------------------------
4. Summarise and prioritise your notes straight after the meeting and don’t file them until you have completed all your actions, it’s a sense of achievement when you have crossed everything out. Make diary notes of the actions so you don’t miss an important deadline.
These pointers may seem fairly obvious but none of us have perfect recall and getting in the habit of good note taking could save your blushes in the future.
