Pretty much every desk in the
world has a stapler as they are one of the most frequently used tools we
METEOR
own. The invention of the stapler can be traced back to the 1700s in France for King Louis XV where each staple was inscribed with the insignia of the royal court, superceding the need for glue and ribbons to hold paper together - albeit an expensive exercise!
George McGill invented the first functional stapler in 1867 and it hit the market in 1869, it was unfortunately a laborious
process as it needed to constantly be reloaded. In 1895, the E.H. Hotchkiss Company designed the modern day stapler
with bendable staples that were wired together but it wasn’t until 1937 when stapling was revolutionised by Jack Linksy with the Swingline range where rows of
staples could be easily inserted, removing the need for intensive manual effort. Today staplers are
used in the office, in building work and by the medical field - don’t you just love them!
